Frequently asked questions

 

1) What do you clear or move? 
     We move or clear almost everything from furniture, clothes, general rubbish, bric-a-brac to sheds, lofts, garages and outbuildings. So  whether your a home owner looking to move home a landlord with tenanted properties, have recently lost a relative, friend or loved one, moving offices, factory or warehouse, or clearing out a school, commercial property or religious establishment, we are here to help. 

2)  Are there any additional charges? 
      We try not to add additional charges but some items are restricted on clearances and can incur additional clearance cost such as tyres, gas bottles, fridges, freezers and mattresses. Gas bottles/Canisters carry an additional charge of £15.00, fridges and freezers which are categorised as hazardous waste, incur an added charge of £30.00, combination fridge freezers or chest freezers would be charged at £40.00 and mattresses £20. 

3)  Do we move rubble from gardens ?
      Bricks, concrete, and rubble can be moved but an onsite skip will be provided at additional cost to the labour involved.

4)  Are there any items we will not clear or move?
      Yes, fuel, explosive material, asbestos or chemical products and large quantities of paint or adhesive (these cannot be moved without specialist licence, so specialist removal companies are advised for this). 

5)  Are there any hidden charges?
      No, we try to be as clear as possible with regards to cost. Sometimes however, when clearing verminous or very cluttered property it may be charged at a daily rate, as exact quotations and tipping charges cannot easily be defined. Any Toll charges, Congestion or city charges will be included in the original quotation, unless specified (Please see terms and conditions.) 

6)  Are you insured against accidents or injury? 
      We have full public liability insurance in place up to 1 million pounds, and goods in transit insurance

7) Are you registered waste carriers? 
     We are fully registered with the Environment Agency. 

8)  What does a house clearance usually entail? 
      We will always arrange to clear a property at a time that is convenient for both parties. We will arrive at an agreed time and clear everything that you requested us to clear. We usually expect to clear a property in one working day (8 hours), this is including loading and unloading or disposal where required. However, if a property is cluttered or if we are requested to search for specific items while on site, such as items of sentimental value, keep-sakes, valuables or paperwork then additional time and costs may be incurred. 

9)  Do you have a standard rate? 
      With the information gathered from either a site visit or telephone conversation, you will receive an emailed quotation explaining the size of the property and what is required to be removed. Once quoted we always endeavour to stick within our quoted price. If however, there are items that we were not advised of during either our site visit or phone conversation, and these additional items cannot be loaded in one clearance run (i.e. one van load) or they require specialist tipping (see section 2), then additional charges may be incurred. 

10)  What is a load?
        A normal 3 bedroom house which is uncluttered is usually a standard load. 

11)  Do you buy any Items? 
        No we are a removal and clearance company so we charge for the removal or clearance of the property only. We do not buy direct so if you wish to sell any items this will need to be arranged with your buyer directly and not through Holmes Clearance Services.            

12)  How do you know a property is cleared?
        Once cleared, our team will take photographs of each room or area and email them showing the completed work. This is a very useful service if the property is in a different location to where you are situated. 

13) Do you recycle? 
       We always try and be as friendly to the environment as possible which means we recycle as much as we possible. We try to avoid sending much of our waste to landfill as we can.

14)  What areas do you cover?
        We cover the whole of the UK, but specifically the midlands area. 

15)  What Days And Times Do You Work? 
        We work 6 days a week (Monday to Saturday) with our office being occupied Monday to Friday 9.00am till 5.00pm. However, Saturday prices will be charged at a higher rate. 

16)   Do you offer a cleaning service for the property.
         Currently no cleaning service is being offered. 

17)  Do we need to be at or near to the property while the job is being completed? 
        No you do not need you to be at the property whilst it is being moved or cleared. We do offer a free local key collection service, so keys can be left with a can a neighbour, agent, solicitor or other family member.  The keys can also be posted (by recorded mail) we will post them back once the removal or clearance is complete (again by recorded post). Please note that Holmes Clearance Services are not responsible if such items are lost in the post.  If you do feel you need to overlook or oversee the work then you are welcome to do so. 

18)  Do we disconnect appliances?
        We have qualified electricians so disconnection of many items can be safely carried out. Gas cookers and hobs can also be disconnected if installed on ‘flexi hose’ system.  If the gas cooker is fitted with a welded joint it will require disconnection by a Gas Safe Engineer prior to the day of clearance (we can arrange this at an additional cost if needed). 

19)  What happens to old discarded paperwork. 
        Unwanted paperwork will be correctly disposed of to comply with Data protection and to stop identity theft. 

20)   What if valuable Items are found during clearance?
         If we find any item of value in the property during the clearance such as money, jewellery, personal effects, family photos or heirlooms, theses are handed back to the person ordering the work. 

21)  When can you do the job? 
        We endeavour to complete the job at a suitable time for both parties. 

22)  What are your payment terms and payment methods?
        All invoices can payed by either credit or debit card, cash, cheque or bank transfer (please note for credit cards a surcharge of 2.5% is applied to all transactions, unfortunately we do not accept American Express). Details for bank transfer will be listed on the final invoice. Terms are 7 days from completed works unless previously agreed.
